SASSA SRD status meanings: what each message on the portal actually means

What each SASSA SRD status means - application received, approved, declined, pending, bank verification failed - and what to do next.

The short answer

On the SASSA SRD portal, "application received" means the application was captured but not yet decided; "approved" means you qualify but does not mean a payment has been made; "declined" means a decision was taken against the application and the 90-day appeal clock has started; "pending" usually means the bank verification has not completed; "bank verification failed" means the account details could not be matched to your identity number. Only the SASSA portal can show this, and this website cannot check your status.

SASSA’s SRD portal shows a status for every application, and the wording matters more than most people realise. “Approved” and “paid” are different states, and treating one as the other is the source of a great deal of frustration.

The statuses, translated

Status you seeWhat it actually meansWhat to do
Application receivedCaptured, not yet decidedWait; check again rather than re-applying
Pending / in progressUnder verification, usually bank verificationCheck the payment details are correct
Bank verification failedThe account could not be matched to your identity numberUpdate payment details on the portal
ApprovedYou qualify for that periodWait for a payment run; check the payment section
Payment processedA payment has been initiated for that periodCheck the bank account and the payment date
DeclinedA decision was taken against the applicationRead the reason; appeal within 90 days
Appeal receivedThe appeal has been lodgedWait; an independent tribunal decides
Cancelled / lapsedNo qualifying period, or the application was withdrawnCheck whether a new application is appropriate

The three that cause the most confusion

Approved. This is the most misunderstood word on the portal. It means SASSA decided you qualify. Payments are made in runs, so there can be a gap between approval and the first payment - and if your account fails verification, an approved grant can sit unpaid for months.

Pending. Usually not a decision at all, but a verification that has not completed. The single most common cause is a bank account that cannot be matched to your identity number: an account in someone else’s name, an account since closed, or a spelling difference between the bank’s record and SASSA’s.

Declined. A decision, and one with a deadline attached. There is an appeal route, and the 90 days run from the date of the outcome - not from the date you noticed it. The reason given determines what the appeal must address.

If your status has not moved in a long time

Work through it in this order:

  1. Check the payment details on the portal. A mismatch explains most stalls.
  2. Check that your cellphone number is current. The one-time PIN and every notification go to the number on the application. A number that has been lost, cancelled or changed leaves you locked out of your own application.
  3. Check whether a decision was actually taken. Pending and declined are different, and the remedy differs.
  4. Contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 with the application reference number.

Do not attempt to fix a stalled application by submitting a new one. Duplicates have to be reconciled, and reconciliation takes longer than whatever problem you started with.

Payment questions

If the status shows a payment processed and nothing has arrived, that is a payment-details problem rather than a status problem, and the SASSA payment dates guide explains the monthly cycle and what “paid” means. If a payment is showing as made to an account you do not recognise, contact SASSA immediately - that is fraud, and the sooner it is flagged the more recoverable it is.

If a decision went against you, the SRD appeals guide covers the 90-day window and what a successful appeal looks like - because an appeal that does not address the stated reason is an appeal that fails. Our own grant information tool will route you to the right official channel based on your question, but it will not and cannot look anything up.

Checklist

  • Check the status on srd.sassa.gov.za, not on a third-party site
  • Keep the cellphone number on the application active - the OTP goes there
  • Make sure the bank account is in your own name
  • If declined, note the 90-day appeal window from the outcome date
  • Never pay anyone to check, release or appeal a grant

Frequently asked questions

What does "approved" mean on the SRD portal?Toggle answer

It means SASSA has decided you qualify for the grant for that period. It does not mean money is on its way today: approved grants are paid in runs, and there can be a period between approval and the first payment. If the status says approved and nothing arrives, check the payment section of the portal rather than re-applying.

Why does my SRD status stay on "pending"?Toggle answer

The most common cause is that the bank verification has not completed. SASSA verifies that the account you nominated belongs to you, and an account in someone else’s name, a closed account, or a mismatch between the account name and your identity number holds the process. Correcting the account details is the fix; applying again is not.

What does "bank verification failed" mean?Toggle answer

The account you nominated could not be verified against your identity number. This happens where the account is not in your own name, where the account was closed, where a digit in the account number is wrong, or where the bank’s record of your name differs from SASSA’s. Update the payment details on the portal and wait for the next verification run.

Does "declined" mean I can never get the grant?Toggle answer

No. A decline can be appealed, and the appeal is decided by an independent tribunal rather than by the person who made the original decision. You have 90 days from the outcome date to lodge an appeal through the official channel. Read the reason given before you draft the appeal - the appeal has to answer that reason.

Can applying again fix a status I do not understand?Toggle answer

Generally no, and it can make things worse. A second application on the same identity number creates a duplicate that has to be reconciled, and it does not reopen a decision that has already been taken. Use the appeal route for a decline and the payment-details route for a verification problem.

Can this website check my SRD status?Toggle answer

No. No website outside SASSA can see an SRD status, and ours does not try to. Our grant information tool asks what your question is and routes you to the official channel. It deliberately has no field for an identity number, a phone number or a one-time PIN, because that is exactly how grant fraud starts.
