Privacy policy

The short version: this site has no database and no accounts, nothing you type into a calculator leaves your browser, analytics and advertising cookies only load after you consent, and the only personal information we ever hold is an email address you chose to give us.

Who is responsible for your information

Find SA Status (findsastatus.co.za) is an independent South African information service. It is not a government body and has no official status. For the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), Find SA Status is the responsible party for the limited processing described on this page. Privacy questions and requests go to hello@findsastatus.co.za.

The calculators: nothing leaves your browser

Every calculator on this site performs its arithmetic as JavaScript inside the page you are reading. The values you type - a salary, a loan amount, a licence expiry date - are not transmitted to us, not stored on a server, not placed in a cookie or in local storage, and not visible to anyone else. Close the tab and they are gone. The "copy results" button writes to your own clipboard under your own control.

There is no "save my results" feature precisely because offering one would require storing your finances. If you want to keep a result, copy it or print it.

What we do collect, and why

Categories of data processed, purpose and legal basis
What Why When
Your consent choice (stored in your browser's local storage, not on a server) To remember whether you allowed analytics and advertising, so you are not asked on every page Always - it is the mechanism that makes consent work
Aggregate usage statistics (pages viewed, approximate region, device type, referrer) To understand which deadlines people need and where the site is hard to use Only if you grant analytics consent
Advertising identifiers and ad interaction data To display advertising that keeps the site free Only if you grant advertising consent, and only when ads are enabled on the site
Your email address and the topics you selected To send the deadline reminders you asked for Only if you tick the explicit email opt-in checkbox and submit the subscription form
Server logs at our hosting provider (IP address, requested URL, timestamp) Security, abuse prevention and keeping the site online Generated automatically by any web server; retained for a short period

We do not collect identity numbers, passport numbers, phone numbers, banking details, card details, passwords, one-time PINs or CVs. There is nowhere on this site to submit them, and we do not want them.

Third parties that process data for us

  • Cloudflare Pages - hosting and content delivery, including security logs.
  • Google Analytics 4 - aggregate usage measurement, loaded only after analytics consent.
  • Microsoft Clarity - aggregate interaction and heat-map measurement, loaded only after analytics consent, with inputs masked.
  • Google AdSense - advertising, loaded only after advertising consent and only while advertising is enabled.
  • MailerLite - email delivery for the deadline alerts, holding the subscriber address and topic preferences.

Some of these providers process data outside South Africa. Where they do, the transfer relies on the provider's contractual data-protection terms and POPIA section 72's provisions on cross-border transfers. We do not sell personal information to anyone, and we do not permit our email list to be used for anything other than the alerts you asked for.

Your rights

Under POPIA (and, for visitors in the European Union, the GDPR) you may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to processing, withdraw consent at any time, and complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa. Email hello@findsastatus.co.za and we will respond within 30 days.

In practice the answer is usually short, because we hold very little: if you subscribed, your email address and topics; if you accepted analytics, aggregate statistics that are not tied to your identity by us. Unsubscribing removes you from the list, and the link is in every email.

Children

The site is written for a general audience and does not target children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, which necessarily includes children - the calculators work locally and the email list requires an address that we assume belongs to an adult.

Security and retention

Because the site is static and has no database, there is no store of reader information to breach. The email list is held by our email provider under their security controls, and access to it is limited to the people who send the alerts. Records are retained only as long as they are needed for the purpose they were collected for, or as long as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

This policy is reviewed on the date shown at the top of the page, and the review date is published rather than hidden. Material changes - a new processor, a new category of data - are reflected here before the change takes effect. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated policy, and you can always withdraw consent through the cookie policy controls.
