The short answer
You have 90 days from the date of a declined SRD outcome to lodge an appeal. Appeals are lodged through the official SASSA appeals channel and are decided by an independent tribunal, not by the person who made the original decision. The appeal must address the specific reason given for the decline. An appeal is not a re-application, and submitting a new application does not reopen a decision that has already been taken.
A decline is a decision with a reason attached, and the appeal process exists to test that reason. It is not a second chance to apply, it is not a complaint, and it is not decided by the same official - which is precisely why addressing the reason matters so much.
The 90-day clock
You have 90 days from the date of the outcome to lodge an appeal. The clock runs from the decision date recorded on the system, not from the day you discovered it. Anyone who checks the portal irregularly can lose the right to appeal without ever knowing it was running.
What the appeal must do
An appeal that repeats the original application gives the tribunal nothing. An appeal works when it answers the specific ground on which the application was refused:
| Reason given | What the appeal should address |
|---|---|
| Income above the threshold | Income that has ended, changed or was incorrectly attributed - with evidence |
| Already receiving another grant | Whether that grant has ceased, or that the record is wrong |
| Bank verification failed | The corrected account detail, in your own name |
| Identity or citizenship verification | Documents that establish the position |
| Registered for NSFAS or similar | Whether you still are, or that the record is out of date |
| Alternative income source detected | Why that source does not exist or has ended |
How to lodge it
Appeals are lodged through the official appeals channel on the SASSA SRD portal. You will need the identity number used in the application, the reference number from the application or the outcome, and the cellphone number registered to the application so you can receive the verification code.
If your number has changed and you cannot receive the code, that has to be corrected first. A locked-out applicant cannot appeal through the portal, and SASSA’s call centre on 0800 60 10 11 is the route to fixing the contact details.
After you lodge
- Keep the reference number. It is the only way to trace the appeal.
- Check the portal for the outcome rather than waiting for a message. Notifications go to the number on the record, which is often the problem.
- Expect weeks. Appeals are decided in batches by an independent tribunal.
- If the appeal fails, the outcome will state the basis. A further step may exist but is limited - this is where consulting SASSA directly, rather than a paid intermediary, is the right move.
The two mistakes that cost people the grant
Applying again instead of appealing. A second application does not reopen a decided one, and it creates a duplicate record that has to be reconciled - which takes longer than the appeal would have.
Paying someone to appeal. There is no legitimate paid appeal service. An appeal costs nothing, is lodged by the applicant, and is decided on the evidence. Every request for a fee to “win” an appeal is fraud, and the requests usually come with a demand for an ID number, banking details or a one-time PIN - which is the actual objective.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to appeal an SRD decline?Toggle answer
90 days from the date of the outcome you are appealing. The clock runs from the decision date on the system, not from the day you happened to check the portal, so a decline you discover two months late may already be close to the limit. Lodge as soon as you know.
Where do I lodge an SRD appeal?Toggle answer
Through the official appeals channel on the SASSA SRD portal. The appeal route is separate from the application route, and it exists specifically so the decision can be reviewed by someone other than the original decision-maker.
What should the appeal say?Toggle answer
It must address the reason given for the decline. If the decline was based on income that is no longer received, say so and provide evidence. If it was based on a verification failure, explain and correct the detail. An appeal that simply says "I disagree" or repeats the original application gives the tribunal nothing to decide in your favour.
Can I just apply again instead of appealing?Toggle answer
No, and it can hurt you. A new application does not reopen a decided application, and it can create a duplicate record on your identity number that has to be reconciled. If the decline was wrong, the appeal is the route. If your circumstances have genuinely changed, a new application for a new period may be appropriate - SASSA can confirm which applies.
How long does an SRD appeal take?Toggle answer
Appeals are processed in batches and are decided by an independent tribunal, so a decision takes weeks rather than days. Keep the appeal reference number and use it for any follow-up. Check the portal for the appeal outcome rather than relying on a notification you may not receive.
Does an appeal cost anything?Toggle answer
No. Appeals, like applications, are free. Anyone charging a fee to lodge or "win" an appeal is committing fraud, and anyone asking for your ID number, banking details or a one-time PIN in connection with an appeal is attempting to take over your grant.
