UIF and SASSA status meanings - what your message actually means

Choose the status message you received to find out what it means and where to check it officially. No ID number, no personal details, nothing stored.

Last reviewed 13 October 2026 · next scheduled review 1 November 2026 · runs entirely in your browser

How to use it

  1. Choose the service - Select SASSA permanent grants, the SRD grant, or a UIF claim.
  2. Pick the message you received - For example 'still pending', 'approved but no payment', or 'declined'.
  3. Read the explanation - You get what the message usually means and the most common causes.
  4. Follow the official channel - Each explanation links to the official way to confirm your real position.

This is not a status checker

No website other than the official one can see your SASSA or UIF status. We cannot check it, and we will never ask you for your ID number, phone number, OTP or banking details to try. Nothing you select below is sent anywhere or stored.

Pick a topic above and we will show the official route, the steps and the contact details.

SASSA official channels

  • SRD status and appeals: srd.sassa.gov.za
  • General enquiries: 0800 60 10 11
  • WhatApp: 082 046 8553
  • Appeal line: 0800 60 10 11 (option for appeals)
  • Email: grantsenquiries@sassa.gov.za
  • USSD: *120*69277#

SASSA does not charge to apply or to appeal, and does not ask for a fee or an OTP.

UIF official channels

  • Claims and status: uif.labour.gov.za (uFiling)
  • Call centre: 0800 030 007
  • Department of Employment and Labour: labour.gov.za
  • Nearest Labour Centre for in-person claims

UIF benefits are free to claim. Anyone asking for a fee to "release" a UIF payment is committing fraud.

This is a guided explanation tool, not a status check. Select the message you received from UIF, SASSA or the SRD grant and it explains what that message usually means and which official channel can confirm your actual position.

Why no other website can check your status

SASSA and UIF status information sits in government systems that are not open to third parties. A website can only show you a status if it is the official government portal, or if it is asking you to hand over your identity number and a one-time PIN - which is exactly how grant fraud is committed.

This tool does none of that. It asks what your question is, tells you which official channel answers it, and gives you the steps. Nothing you select is transmitted, stored or logged, and there is no field here for an ID number, phone number or banking detail.

The channels that actually resolve a problem

For SRD grants, the SRD portal handles applications, status checks and appeals. For grants administered at a SASSA office, the call centre on 0800 60 10 11 and the nearest office are the routes that produce a decision. For UIF, the uFiling portal and the Department of Employment and Labour's call centre on 0800 030 007 are the routes.

In-person visits remain useful when a record is wrong in a way a website cannot fix - a misspelled name, a mismatched bank account, a suspension. Take your identity document and any reference numbers, and ask for the reference number of the query you lodge.

Fees, OTPs and the appeal clock

Applying for a SASSA grant or a UIF benefit is free. Anyone asking for a fee to 'release' a payment is committing fraud. Nobody legitimate will ask you for your one-time PIN, your bank card details or your online banking password.

If a grant is declined, the appeal window is limited - for SRD grants, 90 days from the outcome. Lodge the appeal through the official channel and keep the reference number. An appeal is not the same thing as a new application, and submitting a second application does not reopen the original decision.

How this fits into the rest of the site

A calculator answers "what number", but the decision behind it is usually about a date and an official process. If you are checking whether a deadline has passed, the Important Dates Centre carries the published dates with their sources. If you are checking a government status, no calculator can help you and no website outside government can either - the relevant official link is listed at the bottom of this page.

We do not claim to be a government service and this tool has no official standing. It is an independent estimate published for planning, with its sources named so you can check every figure against the body that actually decides it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you check my SASSA or UIF status for me?Toggle answer

No, and neither can any other private website. Only SASSA and the UIF can see their own records. What we can do is explain what a message means, what usually causes it, and how to reach the official channel that can actually confirm it.

Why do you not ask for my ID number?Toggle answer

Because we do not need it and it would be irresponsible to collect it. Your ID number combined with your name is enough to attempt identity fraud. Sites that ask for an ID number to "check your status" are collecting exactly the data an identity thief wants.

What is a legitimate SASSA toll-free number?Toggle answer

SASSA's national toll-free helpline is published on its official website. Always take the number from sassa.gov.za rather than from a search result, a WhatsApp forward or a social media post, because scam call centres impersonate SASSA using near-identical numbers.
