The short answer
To appeal a declined SASSA SRD grant, go to the official portal at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals within 90 days of rejection. Enter your ID number and registered phone number, verify via SMS OTP, select the declined month, choose your grounds for appeal, and submit. If successful, backpay is released during the next payment run.
If your monthly R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) application has been declined, you have the legal right under the Social Assistance Act to appeal each declined month to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
Understanding Why Your Application Was Declined
Before you lodge an appeal, check the exact reason code provided on your status check screen:
- Alternative income source identified: Bank audits detected deposits of R624 or more in your personal bank accounts during that calendar month.
- Identity verification failed: Your name, surname or ID number did not match the Department of Home Affairs National Population Register.
- UIF registered: The Department of Employment and Labour database indicated you received Unemployment Insurance Fund benefits.
- NSFAS registered: You were listed as receiving tertiary education funding or bursaries from the state.
Step-by-Step Online Appeal Process
Step 1: Access the Independent Tribunal Portal
Open your browser and navigate to the official portal at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. Do not submit appeals on unofficial third-party websites or social media channels.
Step 2: Request Your Security PIN
Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the mobile phone number you registered with SASSA. Click Send Pin. Enter the 4-digit OTP sent to your phone via SMS.
Step 3: Select the Declined Month
The SRD grant is evaluated on a monthly basis. You must lodge a separate appeal for each month that shows “Declined”. Select the month you are disputing.
Step 4: Submit Your Grounds of Appeal
Select the reason why the decline was inaccurate:
- If you received a once-off emergency loan from a relative that pushed your account above R624, indicate that you do not have recurring alternative income.
- If your UIF benefits terminated or you never received payout despite being registered, state that your UIF claim is inactive.
Step 5: Save Your Reference
After submitting, take a screenshot of your confirmation receipt. The Tribunal will independently cross-examine commercial bank data and communicate its decision within 60 to 90 days.
Checklist
