How matric-level recruitment works in the public service
The public service uses a post level system from level 1 to level 16. Posts at level 5 and below generally require a National Senior Certificate, or in some cases only literacy. The advertisement states the level and the salary notch attached to it.
Recruitment for these posts is decentralised: each department runs its own selection process, often at district or regional level. The same job title at two departments can have different requirements, timelines and interview formats, so the advertisement is the only reliable guide.
Some departments run aptitude or competency tests as a first screening step for high-volume entry-level posts. If a test forms part of the process, the advertisement will say so.
