Why the closing date matters more than the posted date
Most public-service vacancies are advertised for a two- to four-week window, and a disproportionate share of applications arrive in the final two days. Departments do not accept an application after the closing date, and several do not accept one posted in time but delivered afterwards.
If a vacancy closes within seven days and you have not started, treat it as a decision point: either you can assemble a complete Z83 and CV in the time available, or you should note the department for the next round. An incomplete application is worse than none, because some departments record it against the applicant.
What to confirm before you send
Confirm the closing time as well as the date. Some advertisements close at 16:00 rather than midnight, and email submissions sometimes close earlier than hand deliveries.
Confirm the delivery method. Advertisements specify email, hand delivery, post or an online portal, and departments frequently reject applications delivered through the wrong channel.
Confirm the reference number appears where the advertisement asks for it. Applications without a reference number are commonly rejected without being assessed.
