Public holidays and long weekends planner: how to get the most leave for the least days

A practical method for planning leave around South Africa’s public holidays and school breaks - which clusters give four-day weekends, and what the leave costs.

The short answer

A long weekend is created when a public holiday touches a weekend or when a single day of leave bridges the gap between them. South Africa’s best clusters in 2026 and 2027 fall in late March and April, in June around Youth Day, and in December. Because the Public Holidays Act moves a Sunday holiday to the Monday but leaves a Saturday holiday in place, the same holiday produces a long weekend one year and not the next.

Most people plan leave by picking dates and hoping the calendar cooperates. Planning it the other way round - read the public holidays, find the clusters, then spend the minimum leave on the best available break - takes twenty minutes and gives back days.

The method

  1. Write down every public holiday and its weekday. Weekday matters more than the date.
  2. Mark the ones adjacent to a weekend - a Friday or Monday holiday is a three-day break for free.
  3. Look for the bridge days. A Tuesday holiday means Monday is a bridge; a Thursday holiday means Friday is a bridge; a Wednesday holiday needs two bridge days from either side.
  4. Check the second calendar. School terms, breaks and special school holidays come from a different document, and a family plan has to satisfy both.
  5. Add up the cost in leave days and compare clusters before booking.

That is the whole method. The rest of this page is what it produces for 2026 and 2027.

2026: where the breaks are

ClusterPublic holidayBreak with no leaveBreak with leave

HeritageHeritage Day 24 September (Thu)24–27 September, four days with one day of leave21 September plus Friday 25 = six days for two days of leave
Reconciliation16 December (Wed)16 December onlyFour days for one day of leave either side

2026’s disappointment is 21 March and 26 December: both fall on Saturdays, so they produce nothing beyond the weekend, and there is no substitute day.

2027: the best year in the three-year window

The 2027 calendar is unusually generous, and the reason is a quirk worth understanding - it is a school holiday, not a public holiday, that creates the year’s best break.

The second calendar: school terms

The school year runs on its own gazetted calendar, and the term breaks are not public holidays. Planning a family break means knowing both:

  • Term dates for the year in question - see the 2027 school calendar and the school terms explainer.
  • Break dates, which are nearly four weeks long in June and December in 2027 and are when travel prices peak - see school holidays 2027.
  • Special school holidays, which close schools and sometimes create the illusion of a public holiday.

Booking travel inside a term break costs more than the same trip a week later. Booking it in the gap between the public holiday and the break is often the effective compromise.

The rules that decide whether a holiday helps

SituationResult
Holiday on Monday or FridayThree-day weekend, no leave
Holiday on Tuesday or ThursdayFour-day break for one day of leave
Holiday on WednesdayFive-day break for two days of leave
Holiday on SaturdayNothing - the Act does not move it
Holiday on SundayThe Monday becomes the holiday

A year with several Saturday holidays is a year with fewer free breaks. 2026 has two; 2027 has one.

Planning something that costs money

Two deadlines matter if a break involves spending:

  • School-term travel is priced because everyone travels in the same week. Booking the shoulder - the week before or after a break - is materially cheaper.
  • Documents expire while you are not looking. A passport needs to be valid well beyond travel dates, and both passports and identity documents take weeks rather than days.

Work out the numbers for your own plan

The long weekend planner takes the public holidays for any year we hold and shows which clusters form and what each costs in leave. It runs entirely in your browser, stores nothing, and labels its output as an estimate. The public holidays long weekends page shows the same clusters as a fixed list, and the replacement holidays page explains how the Sunday-substitute rule has applied over the years.

Last reviewed 13 October 2026. Public holiday behaviour is set by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994; school dates are set by the annual school calendar gazette. Confirm both against the current gazettes before booking.

Checklist

  • Map the public holidays onto the school term dates for the year you are planning
  • Identify the Tuesday, Thursday and Wednesday holidays - they are the ones worth leave
  • Check whether a holiday falls on a Saturday and produces nothing
  • Book leave early for the April cluster, which fills up first
  • Test each plan against your annual leave balance before you book

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a long weekend?Toggle answer

A run of three or more consecutive days off that includes at least one public holiday, or a run of four or more days created by taking a small amount of leave around one. A Friday or Monday public holiday gives three days; a Tuesday or Thursday holiday gives four with one day of leave; a Wednesday holiday gives five with two days of leave.

Which long weekend is best in 2027?Toggle answer

The Freedom Day cluster. Friday 23 April is a school day, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April are a weekend, Monday 26 April 2027 is a special school holiday and Tuesday 27 April is Freedom Day. For families with school-going children that is a five-day break with no leave at all, and one day of leave extends it to Wednesday.

Do school terms and public holidays overlap?Toggle answer

Yes, and it matters. The school calendar sets terms, breaks and occasional special school holidays; the Public Holidays Act sets public holidays. A special school holiday closes school but not workplaces - 15 June 2026 and 26 April 2027 are both examples - so a family plan based on the school calendar alone can leave parents short of leave.

Is it worth taking leave around a Wednesday public holiday?Toggle answer

Often yes. A Wednesday holiday becomes a five-day break with two days of leave - Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday - and it does not consume the long weekend everyone else books. For a team where several people want the same dates, the Wednesday clusters are the ones nobody fights over.

Can my employer refuse leave around a long weekend?Toggle answer

Leave is granted at the employer’s discretion in the sense that operational requirements can be raised, but the leave cycle, the number of days and the timing of leave are subject to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the employee’s contract. A blanket refusal of all leave around public holidays would not generally be defensible; individual refusals for operational reasons can be. Ask early, and in writing.

How many days of annual leave do I have?Toggle answer

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act gives employees 21 consecutive days of annual leave on full pay per 12-month cycle for those on a five-day week - commonly expressed as 15 working days. Sectoral determinations and contracts can be more generous. Long-weekend planning is about how to spend those days, not about getting more of them.
