The short answer

In 2027 South African public schools close for the autumn break from Saturday 20 March to Monday 5 April, for winter from Saturday 26 June to Monday 19 July, for spring from Thursday 23 September to Monday 4 October, and for summer from Thursday 9 December. Monday 26 April 2027 is an additional special school holiday. The four main breaks total 53 days, plus another 29 in December and January.

The 2027 school year is shorter than 2026 - 197 learner days instead of 200 - and the holiday dates reflect that. The breaks are placed differently, and the autumn break is unusually long.

The four breaks

BreakDatesDaysLearners return
AutumnSat 20 March – Mon 5 April 202717Tue 6 April
WinterSat 26 June – Mon 19 July 202724Tue 20 July
SpringThu 23 September – Mon 4 October 202712Tue 5 October
SummerFrom Thu 9 December 2027-Not yet gazetted

Every one of those return dates is a Tuesday, which is a consistent feature of the 2027 calendar and not a coincidence: it maximises the number of uninterrupted teaching weeks.

The special school holiday

Monday 26 April 2027 is a special school holiday. Public schools close, and it sits immediately before Freedom Day on Tuesday 27 April, which turns a single public holiday into a four-day break for learners.

Three things worth being precise about:

  • It is not a public holiday. Government offices, banks, shops and most employers operate normally.
  • It is only for public schools. Independent schools set their own calendars.
  • It is not a substituted holiday for Freedom Day, which falls on a Tuesday and is observed on the day itself.

Public holidays that fall inside the breaks

Several 2027 public holidays land inside breaks rather than in term time:

HolidayDateFalls during
Human Rights Day (observed)Mon 22 MarchAutumn break
Good FridayFri 26 MarchAutumn break
Family DayMon 29 MarchAutumn break
Heritage DayFri 24 SeptemberSpring break
Day of ReconciliationThu 16 DecemberSummer break

A public holiday inside a break does not extend it. It is simply a holiday. Where a holiday does create a long weekend outside term time, the public holidays 2027 page has the substitution rules and the long weekends page shows what forms.

The December question

Learners close on Wednesday 8 December 2027. The gazette does not confirm when they return in January 2028, because the 2028 calendar had not been published at our last review. Recent years have started in the second week of January, so mid-January 2028 is the working assumption - but we record that as tentative rather than confirmed, and this page changes when the gazette does.

Planning around the breaks

Two tools on this site are built from the same dataset as this page, so they cannot disagree with it:

  • The school term countdown counts the days to the end of any term or the start of the next.
  • The long weekend planner works out which public holidays combine into a break and how much leave each option costs.

If you are planning a school year rather than a holiday, the 2027 school calendar carries the full term dates and the learner-day totals, and the school terms explainer covers how the calendar is set in the first place.

Last reviewed 13 October 2026 against Government Gazette 52178 of 25 February 2025. The government’s own summary page has shown incorrect 2027 Term 3 and 4 dates; the gazette is authoritative.

Checklist

  • Book December travel around 9 December 2027, the first day of the summer break
  • Note the autumn break is unusually long - 17 days - in 2027
  • Diarise the special school holiday on Monday 26 April 2027
  • Do not assume a public holiday inside a break extends it
  • Confirm dates with your own school if it is independent

Frequently asked questions

When are the 2027 school holidays in South Africa?Toggle answer

Autumn: 20 March to 5 April. Winter: 26 June to 19 July. Spring: 23 September to 4 October. Summer: from 9 December. All dates are for public schools and are the same in every province.

How long is the winter holiday in 2027?Toggle answer

The winter break runs from Saturday 26 June to Monday 19 July 2027 - 24 days, learners returning on Tuesday 20 July. It is the longest of the three mid-year breaks and the one most families use for extended travel.

Is 26 April 2027 a school holiday?Toggle answer

Yes, but only for schools. Monday 26 April 2027 is a special school holiday gazetted by the Department of Basic Education, which combines with Freedom Day on Tuesday 27 April to give learners a four-day break. It is not a public holiday: government offices, banks and most businesses trade normally.

When do schools reopen in January 2028?Toggle answer

That date has not been gazetted. The 2027 calendar confirms that learners close on 8 December 2027 but does not confirm the 2028 reopening, because the 2028 calendar had not been published at our last review. Recent years have opened in the second week of January, and we record the date as tentative until it is gazetted.

Do public holidays that fall in the holidays extend them?Toggle answer

No. A public holiday inside a school holiday is simply a public holiday. It does not extend the break. In 2027, Human Rights Day, Good Friday and Family Day all fall inside the autumn break, and Heritage Day falls inside the spring break, without changing the return dates.

Are these dates the same for independent schools?Toggle answer

No. Independent schools set their own calendars and frequently differ by a week or more. Some align with the public calendar for convenience; others do not. Check with the individual school.
