The short answer

Apply for a South African passport at any Department of Home Affairs office that offers passport services, or at a participating bank branch if you are a client. You need your identity document or Smart ID card, your birth certificate for a first passport, and the prescribed fee. Standard processing takes several weeks; the express process is faster for a higher fee and is only available at certain offices. You must collect the passport in person so your fingerprints can be verified.

A passport is the one document that has to be right the first time, because a delay is measured in a missed flight rather than an inconvenience. The good news is that the requirement list is short.

Where and how to apply

Applications are captured at Department of Home Affairs offices that offer passport services, and at participating bank branches for existing bank clients. Both capture the same biometrics - fingerprints, photograph and signature - and both lead to the same central production process.

Applications must be made in person. There is no online application, and there is no agent who can apply for you, because your fingerprints are the application.

Documents

ApplicationWhat you bring
Adult renewalYour current passport plus your Smart ID card or green ID book
First adult passportYour identity document and an unabridged birth certificate
Child passportBoth parents’ identity documents, the child’s birth certificate, consent documentation
Lost or stolenAn affidavit plus the replacement passport requirements

Take certified copies of anything you are not willing to hand over, and keep the originals with you where the office only needs to sight them.

Fees and processing

Two routes:

  • Standard process. Lower fee, quoted in weeks. Available at all passport offices.
  • Express process. Higher fee, shorter turnaround, available at selected offices only. Not every office offers it, and it is capacity-dependent rather than guaranteed.

Fees for adults and children differ, and the schedule is adjusted from time to time. Confirm the amount when you book - turning up with an outdated fee wastes the appointment.

Collection

You collect in person so the office can verify your fingerprints against the application. Take the receipt or reference you were given. If someone else offers to collect it for you, they cannot, and you should be sceptical about why they would offer.

For a child, a parent or legal guardian collects with the same verification.

Special cases

Lost or stolen abroad. Report it to the police in the country where it happened, then contact the nearest South African mission for an emergency travel certificate to get home. An emergency certificate is not a passport and will not get you anywhere except home.

A name change. Apply for the passport in your new name only after the change is registered on the identity system. A passport that does not match your other documents creates problems at every border.

Travelling with children. Many countries, South Africa included, require documentation proving consent when a child travels with one parent or with a third party. That is a border requirement, separate from the passport, and it is checked at the airport rather than at Home Affairs.

If your identity document needs attention before you apply, start with the Smart ID card guide or the lost ID guide. If you are travelling to South Africa rather than from it, the visas guide covers entry requirements.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a South African passport take?Toggle answer

Standard processing is quoted in weeks rather than days, and the express service is offered at selected offices for a higher fee with a shorter turnaround. Home Affairs publishes current processing times, and they change with demand. Apply well before you intend to travel - a passport that arrives after your flight is no passport at all.

What does a passport cost?Toggle answer

Fees differ between an adult and a child passport and between the standard and express processes, and they are adjusted from time to time. The current fee schedule is published by Home Affairs. Take the fee in a form the office accepts, or confirm the payment method when you book - not every office takes a card.

Can I get a passport for a minor?Toggle answer

Yes, but both parents or legal guardians must consent. That means both parents’ identity documents and, where required, a completed consent form or a court order in cases where consent cannot be obtained. A child passport has a shorter validity than an adult passport and its own fee.

Do I need to hand in my old passport?Toggle answer

When you apply for a renewal, the old passport is cancelled and returned to you, usually with the corners clipped, so you retain your travel history and any valid visas in it. Take the old passport with you to the application.

Can someone apply for or collect a passport on my behalf?Toggle answer

No. The application captures your fingerprints, and collection verifies them. That applies to adults and to children, whose fingerprints or a parent’s verification are captured at both ends. There is no legitimate agent who can shortcut this.

What if my passport is lost or stolen abroad?Toggle answer

Report it to the local police in the country you are in, then contact the nearest South African mission or consulate for an emergency travel certificate. An emergency travel certificate lets you return home; it is not a replacement passport and is not accepted for onward travel in most cases.
