The short answer
South Africa has twelve public holidays fixed by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, plus any day declared by proclamation - such as an election day. In 2026 one holiday moves: National Women’s Day falls on Sunday 9 August, so Monday 10 August is the public holiday in its place. Human Rights Day (Saturday 21 March) and the Day of Goodwill (Saturday 26 December) stay on their Saturdays and produce no substitute day off.
South Africa’s public holidays come from a short statute, and which day of the week they fall on decides the shape of the year. In 2026 the calendar produces one substitute day, two stranded Saturdays and three public holidays that sit next to a weekend in a way that can be turned into a longer break with one day of leave.
Every 2026 public holiday
| Date | Day | Holiday |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | Thursday | New Year’s Day |
| 21 March | Saturday | Human Rights Day |
| 3 April | Friday | Good Friday |
| 6 April | Monday | Family Day |
| 27 April | Monday | Freedom Day |
| 1 May | Friday | Workers’ Day |
| 16 June | Tuesday | Youth Day |
| 9 August | Sunday | National Women’s Day |
| 10 August | Monday | National Women’s Day (observed) |
| 24 September | Thursday | Heritage Day |
| 16 December | Wednesday | Day of Reconciliation |
| 25 December | Friday | Christmas Day |
| 26 December | Saturday | Day of Goodwill |
Twelve statutory holidays, thirteen days off, because the Sunday holiday moves.
The day off that is not an extra day
Sunday 9 August 2026 is National Women’s Day. Monday 10 August is the public holiday in its place - one holiday observed on the Monday, not two. Any employer or outlet advertising a “double” Women’s Day holiday in 2026 is describing the calendar incorrectly.
Where the long weekends are
Two clusters are worth planning around:
- March–April: Good Friday 3 April and Family Day 6 April sit either side of a weekend, and Freedom Day follows on Monday 27 April. Two separate long weekends, both on fixed dates.
- June and December: Youth Day on Tuesday 16 June and the Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday 16 December each sit next to a weekend. One day of leave either side produces a four-day break - and in June, Monday 15 June is a special school holiday, which closes public schools but not businesses.
The long weekends page works out each cluster, and the long weekend planner lets you test how much leave a particular break costs. For the fuller picture of how to plan leave around school terms, the planner guide in our education section covers the family version of the same problem.
What this means for leave planning
Three practical rules for 2026:
- Do not count on a substitute for 21 March or 26 December. Weekend work or leave arrangements around those dates should assume the office is open on the Monday.
- Use the Monday–Friday holidays deliberately. Freedom Day, Workers’ Day, Family Day and Good Friday all fall on weekdays in 2026, so public holidays are being spent on working days rather than wasted on weekends.
- Check the school calendar separately. School terms, breaks and special holidays do not follow the public holiday list - the school terms guide explains the difference, and the 2027 calendar has the gazetted dates for the following year.
Pay and shift work
The Basic Conditions of Employment Act requires at least double pay for work on a public holiday, and generally a paid day off in lieu or ordinary pay where the holiday falls on a day the employee would not ordinarily work. Sectoral determinations and bargaining council agreements can differ, and for shift workers the question of which day counts as “the holiday” is worth settling with the employer before the roster is published - not after.
Looking ahead to 2027
The following year behaves differently: Human Rights Day and the Day of Goodwill both fall on Sundays and move to Mondays, while Workers’ Day falls on a Saturday and does not. The 2027 public holidays guide has the full list and the year’s best long weekend.

Frequently asked questions
How many public holidays are there in South Africa in 2026?Toggle answer
Twelve public holidays are set by the Public Holidays Act. Because National Women’s Day falls on a Sunday in 2026, Monday 10 August becomes the public holiday in its place, so the year produces thirteen days off in practice. Any election day that is proclaimed would add one more.
Does a public holiday on a Saturday move to the Monday in 2026?Toggle answer
No. Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act moves a holiday that falls on a Sunday to the following Monday. A Saturday holiday stays where it is. Human Rights Day on Saturday 21 March 2026 and the Day of Goodwill on Saturday 26 December 2026 therefore give no extra day off, which is why 2026 has fewer long weekends than a year without Saturday holidays.
Is Monday 10 August 2026 a public holiday?Toggle answer
Yes - but not as an additional day. Sunday 9 August is National Women’s Day, and section 2(1) moves the day off to Monday 10 August. It is one holiday observed on the Monday, not two holidays.
Is Youth Day linked to the school holiday in 2026?Toggle answer
Yes. Youth Day falls on Tuesday 16 June 2026, and the Department of Basic Education gazetted Monday 15 June 2026 as a special school holiday, which closes public schools for the Youth Day long weekend. The special holiday applies to schools - government offices, banks and most businesses open as normal on 15 June.
What happens if a public holiday competes with another holiday on the same date?Toggle answer
The Public Holidays Act deals with this: where a public holiday falls on a day that is also another public holiday, the following day becomes the public holiday. In 2026 no two holidays coincide, but it is the rule that produced the extra days off in years such as 2021, when Christmas Day fell on a Saturday.
Do I get paid double for working on a public holiday in 2026?Toggle answer
The Basic Conditions of Employment Act requires at least double the ordinary rate for work on a public holiday, and where the holiday falls on a day the employee would not ordinarily work, they are generally entitled to their ordinary pay or a paid day off in lieu. Sectoral determinations and bargaining council agreements can set different terms for particular industries, so check the one covering your workplace.
