The short answer
A vehicle licence disc can be renewed from two months before it expires, and there is a 21-day grace period after expiry during which no penalty applies. Renew at your local registering authority, at a participating Post Office, or through your province’s online renewal channel where one exists. Take the renewal notice, your identity document, proof of address if required, and the old disc. After the grace period, penalties accumulate by month and must be paid before a new disc is issued.
A vehicle licence disc is the simplest recurring admin task a South African motorist has, and it is also one of the easiest to get wrong - usually because a reminder notice never arrived, or because the disc expired three weeks ago and the penalty clock has already started.
The dates that govern a disc
| When | What you can do |
|---|---|
| 2 months before expiry | Renew early. No penalty, no shortened validity. |
| On the expiry date | Deadline. The disc is valid to the end of that month. |
| Days 1–21 after expiry | Grace period. Renew without penalties. |
| From day 22 | Penalties accumulate by month until the disc is renewed. |
The renewal date on a disc is tied to the month, not an arbitrary day. A disc expiring “October 2026” can be renewed during the two months before October, during October, and during the 21-day grace period that follows.
The vehicle licence reminder tool counts down from whatever date you type in - and it keeps the date in your browser, because there is no reason for a website to know when your disc expires.
Where to renew
- Registering authority. Your local municipal licensing office is the default, and the only place that can deal with a disc that needs a roadworthy certificate or where penalties are attached.
- Participating Post Offices. Convenient for straightforward renewals. Coverage varies by province and branch, and Post Offices generally cannot process a renewal that requires a roadworthy or that has outstanding fines attached.
- Online channels. Some provinces offer online renewal for vehicles that do not need a roadworthy certificate. Confirm on your province’s own site - not on a lookalike that charges a “convenience fee”.
What to take with you
Bring the renewal notice (MVL2) if you received one. If you did not - notices are regularly lost in the post - the vehicle registration number and your identity document are usually enough, though requirements vary slightly by licensing authority.
Documents for a standard renewal
Ticks are not saved and are not sent anywhere. Nothing you do on this page leaves your device.
If someone else is renewing on your behalf, they will need a written authorisation and their own identity document as well. That is not a formality: the licensing office is handing over an official document that carries your name.
The fee, and why it differs
Licence fees are set by each province and calculated on the vehicle’s tare weight - the weight of the empty vehicle, not its value, engine size or colour. A light hatchback in Gauteng and the same car in the Western Cape pay different fees, and a bakkie with a heavy tare will pay more than a sedan in any province.
Arrears penalties, where applicable, are added to the current fee and are usually the reason a renewal that “should” cost a few hundred rand comes to several thousand.
What happens if you drive with a lapsed disc
Driving an unlicensed vehicle is an offence under the National Road Traffic Act, and enforcement is not confined to the grace period. Beyond fines, an expired disc has a second consequence that surprises people: insurers increasingly decline or reduce claims where the vehicle was being driven unlicensed. That is a commercial decision by the insurer, unrelated to the merits of the crash.
If your disc lapsed a long time ago, expect substantial arrears. Settle them at the licensing authority rather than through a third party - the authority is the only party that can clear the status on the vehicle record.
Related tasks
If your vehicle also needs a roadworthy certificate, the requirements and the validity period are covered on the roadworthy page. Fines under the AARTO framework, and how they differ from old-style traffic fines, are explained on the traffic fines page.

Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew my vehicle licence disc?Toggle answer
You can renew from two months before the expiry date printed on the disc. Renewing early costs nothing extra and does not shorten the next disc’s validity, which runs twelve months from the original expiry month.
What is the grace period after my licence disc expires?Toggle answer
There is a 21-day grace period after the expiry date during which no penalty accumulates. From day 22, penalties accrue by month for the period the vehicle was unlicensed, and they must be settled before a new disc is issued.
Can I renew my licence disc at the Post Office?Toggle answer
Many Post Offices handle licence disc renewals, but not all of them, and the arrangement differs by province. Post Offices generally cannot renew a disc that requires a roadworthy certificate or where the vehicle has outstanding penalties. Check with your nearest branch or your provincial licensing department before queueing.
What happens if I am stopped with an expired licence disc?Toggle answer
Driving a vehicle with an expired disc is an offence and can result in a fine, and an insurer may look at the state of the disc when assessing a claim. The 21-day grace period is there for people who are in the queue, not as permission to keep driving indefinitely.
How is the licence fee calculated?Toggle answer
The licence fee is set provincially and calculated on the vehicle’s tare weight, not on its value or engine size. Same model, same weight, different provinces - different fees. Arrears penalties, where they apply, are added to the current fee.
Can I check my licence status or arrears online?Toggle answer
Some provinces and the national NaTIS-linked services allow you to check a disc and any arrears before you go in, and this site cannot do that for you. Use your provincial licensing authority or an official NaTIS channel - never a third-party “status check” site that asks for your ID number.
