Last reviewed 13 October 2026 · next scheduled review 15 January 2027 · runs entirely in your browser

How to use it

  1. Find the expiry date on your disc - It is printed on the face of the disc, and the day of the month matters for the grace period calculation.
  2. Enter it here - The date stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
  3. Read the status - You will see days remaining, or how far into the penalty period you are.
  4. Use the checklist - The renewal checklist below the result lists what to take with you.

What to take when you renew

  • The renewal notice (MVL2) if you received one, or the vehicle registration number
  • Proof of identity of the licence holder
  • Proof of address where the licensing authority requires it
  • Payment - fees are set provincially by vehicle tare weight, and arrears penalties if the disc has lapsed
  • The old disc, kept for twelve months as proof of compliance

Renewal is available at a registering authority, participating Post Offices, and in some provinces through an approved online channel. Confirm the channel for your province.

Enter the expiry date printed on your vehicle licence disc to see how many days you have left, whether the 21-day grace period is still running, and the checklist to renew.

The 21-day grace period

A vehicle licence disc can be renewed from two months before its expiry date, and there is a 21-day grace period after expiry during which no penalty applies. Once the grace period ends, penalties accumulate by month for the period the vehicle was unlicensed, and they are payable before a new disc is issued.

The fee itself is set provincially and calculated on the vehicle's tare weight, so two identical models registered in different provinces can cost different amounts. Arrears penalties sit on top of the current fee.

Where you can renew

Renewal is available at a registering authority - the municipal licensing office for your area - and at many participating Post Offices. Some provinces also offer an online renewal channel for licences that do not need a roadworthy certificate.

Take the renewal notice if you received one, your identity document, proof of address where the licensing authority asks for it, and the old disc. Keep the old disc for at least twelve months as proof of compliance if you are stopped.

Driving with an expired disc

Driving a vehicle with an expired licence disc is an offence, and the grace period is not a licence to keep driving indefinitely. Insurance policies increasingly look at the state of the disc when assessing a claim, so an expired licence can complicate a claim even when the driver was not at fault.

If the disc has been expired for a long time, expect arrears to be substantial and settle them at the licensing office rather than paying a third party to 'resolve' it.

How this fits into the rest of the site

A calculator answers "what number", but the decision behind it is usually about a date and an official process. If you are checking whether a deadline has passed, the Important Dates Centre carries the published dates with their sources. If you are checking a government status, no calculator can help you and no website outside government can either - the relevant official link is listed at the bottom of this page.

We do not claim to be a government service and this tool has no official standing. It is an independent estimate published for planning, with its sources named so you can check every figure against the body that actually decides it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the reminder store about me?Toggle answer

Nothing. The date you type stays in your browser's memory for as long as the page is open and is never sent anywhere, saved or shared. There is no account and no cookie involved.

How long is the grace period?Toggle answer

There is a 21-day grace period after the expiry date. After that the disc is overdue and penalties accumulate by month for the period the vehicle was unlicensed.

Can I renew before the disc expires?Toggle answer

Yes. You can renew up to two months before the expiry date without losing any part of the twelve-month period, and renewing early usually avoids both the penalty calculation and the queues.
