Learner’s licence and driver’s licence: the full process, step by step

How to get a learner’s licence, book the driver’s licence test, the 120-day card collection rule, and what to do when a licence card expires or is lost.

The short answer

A learner’s licence requires a booking at a driving licence testing centre, an eye test, a fee and a written test on the rules of the road and vehicle controls. A learner’s licence is valid for 24 months. The driver’s licence test has a yard test and a road test, and once the card is produced you must collect it within 120 days - after that it is destroyed and the process restarts. Driving licence cards are issued with a validity period, and renewing before expiry avoids the re-test requirement that applies to a lapsed card.

The South African licensing process has two deadlines that catch people out more than any other: the learner’s licence expires in 24 months, and a produced driver’s licence card must be collected within 120 days. Both are unforgiving, and both restart the process.

Stage one - the learner’s licence

  1. Book at a driving licence testing centre. Bookings are in demand; queueing without one is rarely productive.
  2. Take an eye test at the centre or bring a valid one from an optometrist.
  3. Pay the fee and receive the appointment.
  4. Write the test - rules of the road, road signs and markings, vehicle controls, and a section on the environment. It is computerised at most centres.
  5. Collect the learner’s licence, valid for 24 months.

Stage two - the driver’s licence

ComponentWhat it covers
Pre-trip inspectionChecks, controls, warning lights - assessed at the start
Yard testIncline start, alley docking, parallel parking, three-point turn
Road testDriving in traffic, observation, signalling, speed control

The yard test is the common failure point, and the reasons are mundane: rolling back on the incline, touching a barrier in the alley dock, failing to check before moving off, or missing a mirror check.

Money-saving practical advice: book the test only when you and an instructor agree you are ready. A failed attempt is a fee, a waiting period and a re-booking.

Stage three - collection, and its 120 days

Once the test is passed and the card is produced and delivered to the testing centre, you must collect it within 120 days. After that the card is destroyed and the entire process - including the test - has to be repeated.

Nobody sends a reliable reminder. The practical approach is to record the date you passed, then follow up at the centre in the following weeks and check the card’s status directly.

Renewal and the lapse problem

Driving licence cards carry a validity period. Renewing before expiry is a routine transaction at a testing centre. Allowing a card to lapse for longer than the regulations permit generally means passing the test again.

Two related points:

  • Post Offices do not renew driving licences. They handle some vehicle licence disc renewals. The confusion is common and expensive in time.
  • A temporary licence is not a substitute for renewing, and it has its own conditions.

If the card is lost or stolen

Report the loss or theft, then apply for a replacement at a testing centre. As with other identity documents, replacing the card is the easy part - the important step is ensuring the old one cannot be used. The lost ID guide covers the principle in the identity document context, and it applies here too.

Fines can surface at any licensing transaction, and the traffic fines guide explains the two systems and the deadlines on each notice. For the vehicle itself, the licence disc guide covers renewal and the 21-day grace period, and the roadworthy guide covers testing.

Last reviewed 13 October 2026. Test requirements, validity periods and the card collection rule are set by the National Road Traffic Act and its regulations; confirm current requirements with your provincial testing centre.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a learner’s licence valid?Toggle answer

A learner’s licence is valid for 24 months from the date it is issued. If it expires, you must re-apply and pass the learner’s test again - a heavy penalty for a date most people forget, so diarise it when you get the licence.

What is in the learner’s licence test?Toggle answer

The written test covers the rules of the road, road signs and markings, vehicle controls and a section on the conservation of the environment. It is computerised at most centres. You need to pass it and have a valid eye test before you can book the driver’s licence test.

How long do I have to collect my driver’s licence card?Toggle answer

120 days from the date the card is produced and delivered to the testing centre. After that period the card is destroyed, and the process has to be repeated - including the test. Check the status of your card at the centre you applied at rather than waiting for a message.

What happens if my driver’s licence card expires?Toggle answer

A card that has been expired for a limited period can be renewed; a card that has lapsed for longer generally requires the driver to pass the test again. The cut-off is defined in the regulations and is not generous. Renew before the expiry date on the card - the grace period is short.

What is the difference between the yard test and the road test?Toggle answer

The yard test is conducted off-road and covers manoeuvring: the incline start, alley docking, parallel parking, a three-point turn and a pre-trip inspection. Pass the yard test and you proceed to the road test, which assesses driving in traffic. Both are passed or failed on the day.

Can I renew my driver’s licence at a Post Office?Toggle answer

No. Driving licence card renewals are handled at driving licence testing centres, not at Post Offices. Vehicle licence disc renewals are the transaction some Post Offices handle - the two are commonly confused.
