The short answer
NSFAS 2027 applications opened on 18 September 2026 and are made online at nsfas.org.za. The closing date has been published inconsistently: the ministerial launch indicated 18 November 2026 while the application guide showed 31 October 2026. Plan around 31 October. Funding outcomes are expected during December 2026. Applying is free, and nobody needs to pay anyone to submit an application for you.
NSFAS 2027 applications opened on 18 September 2026. The one thing every applicant needs to know before doing anything else is that the closing date is disputed in public, and the safe answer is the earlier date.
The 2027 dates, including the conflict
| Date | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 18 September 2026 | Applications open | NSFAS announcement |
| 31 October 2026 | Closing date shown on the NSFAS application guide | NSFAS application guidance |
| 18 November 2026 | Closing date indicated at the ministerial launch | Ministerial launch statement |
| December 2026 | Funding outcomes expected | NSFAS cycle |
Two official communications, two different dates. We do not choose one and quietly discard the other - the 2017 grants and bursaries section records both, and our guidance is simple: meet the earlier date. There is no scenario in which applying by 31 October costs you anything, and there is a real scenario in which applying after it costs you everything.
Who the funding is for
NSFAS funding covers registration and tuition fees and provides allowances for accommodation, transport, learning materials and living expenses for qualifying students at public universities and public TVET colleges.
Eligibility turns on two things: household income and the qualification you are registering for. A household income threshold applies, with a higher threshold for applicants who are living with a disability, and the applicant must be a South African citizen, or a permanent resident in specified circumstances.
Because thresholds change and a summary can go stale, confirm the current figure on the NSFAS website before you decide you do not qualify. Plenty of students who assume they earn too much have never checked the actual threshold.
What you need to submit
The document pack
Ticks are not saved and are not sent anywhere. Nothing you do on this page leaves your device.
Certified copies expire in the eyes of many institutions, and an affidavit signed by the wrong person, or one that does not cover every household member, is the most common cause of a stalled application. Work through the documents in the first week rather than the last: a missing parent’s payslip cannot be produced on the closing day.
Applying without paying anyone
The application is made on the NSFAS website and it is free. There is no legitimate agent, consultant or “facilitator” who can submit it faster, and any request for a fee to submit, expedite or “guarantee” funding should be treated as fraud and reported.
Three practical rules:
- Use your own email address and phone number. A number that belongs to someone else means you never see the OTP or the outcome.
- Apply before results are released if you can. Applications open for exactly this reason, and a late application competes for a smaller pool.
- Keep the reference number. If a portal fails on the closing day, that reference is the proof that you tried.
After you apply: status and appeals
The portal shows a status for every application, and the wording matters. “Application received” is not “funded”; a verification query is not a decline. The NSFAS status meanings page explains each state in plain language and what, if anything, a candidate should do about it.
If the outcome is a decline, the appeal window is published on the NSFAS site and is short. An appeal answers the specific reason for the decline - missing documentation, income verification, or a qualification that is not funded - so read the reason before drafting anything. Lodging an appeal is not the same as applying again, and a second application does not reopen the first decision.
While you wait
Funding outcomes are expected in December 2026, which is the same month in which most university registration processes begin to move. Do not wait for the outcome before accepting a place: accepting an offer and being funded are separate processes, and universities generally have their own rules about holding a place while funding is resolved. The university application deadlines in our dates centre cover the rest of the cycle.

Frequently asked questions
When do NSFAS 2027 applications close?Toggle answer
Officials have published two dates. The ministerial launch indicated 18 November 2026, while the NSFAS application guide showed 31 October 2026 at our last review. Treat 31 October as the deadline you must meet, because applying early can never count against you and missing the earlier date can. This page records both dates and will be updated when they agree.
Who qualifies for NSFAS funding?Toggle answer
Eligibility depends on household income and on the qualification you are registering for. Household income thresholds apply, with a higher threshold for applicants living with a disability, and the applicant must be a South African citizen or, in certain cases, a permanent resident. Thresholds and conditions are set by the scheme and published on its own website - check the current figure there rather than relying on a summary from any third party.
Can I apply without a matric certificate yet?Toggle answer
Yes. Applications open before results are released, and applicants who are waiting for results can still submit. Funding is confirmed only once the results and registration are verified, which is why the outcome usually arrives after results and registration rather than before.
What happens if my NSFAS application is declined?Toggle answer
A declined application can be appealed through the official NSFAS appeal channel within the published window. Read the reason for the decline first: the appeal must answer that reason, whether it is missing documents, income verification or a qualification issue. The appeal is not a new application, and submitting a second application does not reopen the original decision.
Does NSFAS pay for a private college or a distance-learning qualification?Toggle answer
Funding is generally limited to programmes at public universities and public TVET colleges, with specific rules for particular programme types. If you are considering a private institution, confirm directly with NSFAS whether the specific qualification at that institution is funded before you commit to fees you may have to pay yourself.
How do I check my NSFAS status, and can this site do it for me?Toggle answer
Only the NSFAS website and its own contact channels can show your status. This site cannot check it, and you should not give your ID number or a one-time PIN to anyone claiming to check on your behalf. The separate page on NSFAS status meanings explains what each wording on the portal actually means.
