Bursary deadline tracker - NSFAS and funding closing dates
Track open bursary and funding application windows including NSFAS, with the days remaining and links only to official funding pages.
Last reviewed 13 October 2026 · next scheduled review 1 November 2026 · runs entirely in your browser
How to use it
- Check the open windows - Applications are listed with closing dates and days remaining.
- Note the conflicting NSFAS dates - Where official sources disagree we show both rather than picking one.
- Apply through the official channel only - The myNSFAS portal is the only legitimate route for NSFAS funding.
Always accept the earlier published date
When a funding body publishes one date in a speech and a different one on its application site, plan around the earlier date. You cannot lose a place for applying too early; you can lose one by applying too late.
-
NSFAS
NSFAS 2027 applications open
Closes 2026-09-18
-
DHET - TVET colleges
Public TVET college applications for 2027 close
Closes 2026-09-30
This is a national guideline date, not a single statutory deadline. Always confirm with the college.
-
Public universities
University applications for 2027 - most public universities close
Closes 2026-09-30
General convention rather than a single deadline. Check the specific university.
-
NSFAS
NSFAS 2027 applications close - date shown on the NSFAS application guide
Closes 2026-10-31
Status is 'corrected' because two official NSFAS sources conflict. See known_discrepancy in this file.
-
NSFAS
NSFAS 2027 applications close - date announced at the ministerial launch
Closes 2026-11-18
See known_discrepancy in this file. Do not rely on the later date without confirming on myNSFAS.
-
NSFAS
NSFAS 2027 funding outcomes expected
Date not yet announced
Month-level window only. NSFAS does not publish a single release day for outcomes.
-
Provincial education departments
Late school admission applications for the 2027 school year
Date not yet announced
No single national date exists. The guide page links to each province's official admissions portal - Find SA Status deliberately does not fabricate a national deadline.
This tool lists funding windows in our dataset that are currently open, including the NSFAS application period, with the days remaining and a direct link to the official application channel.
Why funding deadlines move
Bursary closing dates change more often than people expect. A funding body can move a date after a launch speech, extend it because of system problems, or publish different dates on different pages of its own website. When that happens, the earlier date is the one to plan around: you cannot be disadvantaged by applying early, and you can easily be disadvantaged by applying late.
This tracker records the dates that have been published, notes where officials have contradicted each other, and says when a date has not yet been announced rather than filling the gap with a guess.
Documents take longer than the application form
Most applications stall on paperwork rather than on the form: a certified copy of an identity document, proof of income for every household member, a consent form signed by a parent or guardian, a recent academic record. Certified copies expire, and a document signed by the wrong person is not accepted.
Work through the document list in the first week of the application window, not the last. If a required document depends on someone else - a parent's payslip, a school's stamped transcript - start that request immediately.
One application, several funding options
A household should not rely on a single funding source. Apply under the national bursary scheme if you qualify, apply to the university or college's own financial aid office, and check employer and sector bursaries in the field you are studying.
Keep a record of every reference number, submission date and portal used. If a system fails on the closing day, that record is what proves you tried to submit.
How this fits into the rest of the site
A calculator answers "what number", but the decision behind it is usually about a date and an official process. If you are checking whether a deadline has passed, the Important Dates Centre carries the published dates with their sources. If you are checking a government status, no calculator can help you and no website outside government can either - the relevant official link is listed at the bottom of this page.
We do not claim to be a government service and this tool has no official standing. It is an independent estimate published for planning, with its sources named so you can check every figure against the body that actually decides it.
Frequently asked questions
Is applying for NSFAS free?Toggle answer
Yes. Applying for NSFAS funding is completely free through the myNSFAS portal. Anything asking for a fee to process or expedite an NSFAS application is a scam.
Why do you show two different NSFAS closing dates?Toggle answer
Because two official NSFAS sources currently disagree: the application guide displays 31 October 2026 and the ministerial launch announced 18 November 2026. We show both and recommend treating the earlier date as the practical deadline rather than silently picking one for you.
Does a bursary application also apply for university admission?Toggle answer
No. Funding and admission are separate processes. You must apply for admission to a public university or TVET college as well as applying for funding, and the two have different deadlines.
