The short answer
The Z83 is the standard application form for posts in the South African public service. Complete every section, sign and date it, attach the documents the advert requires, and submit it to the address, email or portal the advert names by the closing date. The current form requires the reference number and the post title exactly as advertised, and an unsigned or undated Z83 is rejected before shortlisting.
The Z83 is a two-page form that decides whether a public service application is read at all. Departments reject a large share of applications for reasons that have nothing to do with the candidate’s ability: an unsigned form, a missing reference number, a form for a different post.
What the form is
The Z83 is the standard application form prescribed by the Department of Public Service and Administration for posts across the public service - national departments, provincial departments and many public entities. Individual departments advertise posts with their own reference numbers, and the Z83 is the envelope in which your application arrives.
It is deliberately structured: personal details, position applied for, qualifications, work experience, references, and a declaration you sign. Completing it is not difficult. Completing it without a mistake requires attention to detail.
The most common reasons an application is rejected
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Form not signed or not dated | Rejected before shortlisting |
| Reference number or post title copied incorrectly | Application logged against the wrong post |
| Sections left blank instead of “not applicable” | Treated as an incomplete application |
| Qualifications listed without the certificate | Queries, and often exclusion from shortlisting |
| Documents the advert did not ask for | Not disqualifying, but they do not help and they cost you money |
| Submitted to the wrong address, email or portal | Does not arrive |
| Late submission | Does not reach the selection process |
Completing it, section by section
Personal details. Your identity number, full names, contact details and address. Use an email address you actually check and a phone number that is on, because shortlisting correspondence does not always reach a candidate whose details have changed.
The position applied for. The exact title and reference number from the advert. If the advert names a sub-directorate or a centre, include it.
Qualifications. Every qualification you rely on, with the institution and the year. If the advert requires certification, attach certified copies; if it requires the certificate only from shortlisted candidates, list the qualification accurately and be ready to produce it.
Work experience. Most recent first, with dates and a short description of duties. Verification is standard practice for shortlisted candidates, so the duties you list must match what a former manager will confirm.
References. People who supervised you, with current contact details, and - this is the part people miss - ask them first. A reference who is surprised by a call is a weaker reference.
Declaration. Read it, sign it, date it. The declaration is where you confirm the information is true; an unsigned declaration invalidates the application.
What to attach
Follow the advert exactly. Many departments now ask for a completed Z83 and a comprehensive CV, and request certified copies of identity documents and qualifications only from shortlisted candidates, in line with policy aimed at reducing the cost of applying. Where certified copies are requested, they must be current - most departments treat a six-month-old certification as expired.

Where to apply, and where not to
Applications go to the department that advertised the post, at the address given in the advert. If you see the post on an aggregator that asks you to register, pay, or upload your identity number to a third-party site, check the same post on the department’s own site before submitting anything - and never pay to apply for a government job, because it is free.
We publish summaries of vacancies from official sources and link to the advert for the full requirements. We do not accept applications, we are not a recruiter, and we have no influence on any selection decision. The government jobs section lists what is currently open, including posts closing this week.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I get the correct Z83 form?Toggle answer
Download the current version from the Department of Public Service and Administration website or from the department that is advertising the post. Departments must accept the current official form. Do not use a form downloaded from an unofficial site that has added its own branding or a fee.
Do I have to sign and date the Z83?Toggle answer
Yes. An unsigned or undated Z83 is routinely rejected before shortlisting, and it happens every recruitment round. Sign in ink if you are submitting a paper copy, and make sure the date matches the day you sign - not the day you downloaded the form.
Do I need to attach certified documents with my Z83?Toggle answer
Follow the advert. Many departments now require a Z83 and a comprehensive CV, with certified copies of qualifications and the ID requested only from shortlisted candidates, in line with the effort to reduce the cost of applying. Where the advert does ask for certified copies, they must be recent and complete.
Can I apply for more than one post with the same Z83?Toggle answer
You can apply for as many posts as you like, but each application needs its own complete form and its own attachments. Do not photocopy one form for two posts - each advert has its own reference number, and mixing them up is an instant disqualification.
What if I do not meet every requirement in the advert?Toggle answer
Apply anyway if you meet the essential requirements. Adverts list essential and desirable requirements, and only the essential ones are disqualifying. Where you do not yet meet an essential requirement, the application is unlikely to succeed, but a late or unsubmitted application definitely will not.
Does applying through this website help my chances?Toggle answer
No. We do not accept applications, we are not a recruiter, and we have no role in any selection process. We summarise vacancies published by departments and link you to the official advert. Government jobs are free to apply for - anyone charging you a fee is committing fraud.
