The short answer
Public service vacancies are published in the DPSA Circular on the DPSA website and on individual department websites, and applications go to the department that advertised the post, using the Z83 form and whatever else the advert requires, by the closing date. Read the advert carefully: the reference number, the essential requirements and the submission address are the three things that decide whether the application is considered. Applying for a government job is free, and nobody can influence a selection decision.
Public service recruitment is unusually transparent: posts must be advertised, adverts are published publicly and free, and the process is governed by regulations. That transparency is an advantage for an applicant who reads the advert properly - which, in practice, is what most applicants do not do.
Where vacancies are published
- The DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular - a weekly circular listing posts across national and provincial departments.
- Individual department websites - the authoritative adverts, with full requirements and the submission details.
- Public entities and state-owned companies - their own sites, and their own application processes.
Aggregator sites reproduce the circular, sometimes with errors, missing pages, or a different closing date. The purpose of a listing site is to point you at the advert, not to replace it - including ours.
Reading an advert
Four things decide whether an application is considered:
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Reference number and exact post title | Misquoting either can mean the application is logged against the wrong post |
| Essential requirements | The only criteria that disqualify |
| Closing date and time | Late submissions are not accepted |
| Submission address or portal | Going to the wrong place means not arriving |
Then the substance: qualifications, experience, and any registration or licence the post requires.
Applying
- Download the current Z83 from the DPSA or the advertising department. The Z83 guide covers every section.
- Complete it fully - write “not applicable” rather than leaving blanks.
- Sign and date it. This is the most common single reason an application is discarded.
- Attach what the advert asks for, no more and no less.
- Submit to the named address before the closing date, and keep proof of submission.
Many departments now request a Z83 and a comprehensive CV, with certified copies of qualifications and the identity document only from shortlisted candidates. That is a deliberate policy to reduce the cost of applying - so follow the specific advert rather than a general rule.
After you apply
The process generally runs: shortlisting against the essential criteria, interviews with a panel, verification of qualifications and references, and then appointment. Where a post is not filled, the department may re-advertise - and re-applying for the next cycle is not a sign of failure, it is how the process works.
Two things to do while you wait:
- Keep your reference details, because a query without them is far harder to pursue.
- Keep applying. Public service recruitment is slow, and a candidate with several live applications is more likely to be employed this year than one waiting on a single post.
The fraud that surrounds this
Government jobs are free to apply for. There is no fee, no “processing charge”, no “placement fee” and no agent who can improve the outcome. Every message asking for money to secure a government post is fraud, and the ones asking for your identity number, a CV and banking details are also harvesting personal data.
There is a second scam worth naming: a message claiming you have been “shortlisted” and asking you to pay for a medical, a uniform or training before starting. Government departments do not require payment from an appointee before appointment.
Where to look next
Our government jobs section lists what is currently open, including posts closing this week, and our summaries always link to the official advert. If you are also considering private-sector work or self-employment, the tender application guide covers supplying the state rather than working for it.

Frequently asked questions
Where are government jobs advertised in South Africa?Toggle answer
The DPSA publishes a weekly Public Service Vacancy Circular listing posts across national and provincial departments. Individual departments also publish vacancies on their own websites, and these are the authoritative adverts with the full requirements. Aggregator sites reproduce the circular, sometimes with errors or omissions, so always check the advert at source.
What documents do I need to apply for a government job?Toggle answer
A completed and signed Z83 form, and whatever else the specific advert requires - which is often a comprehensive CV, and in some cases certified copies of qualifications and the identity document. Many departments now request certified copies only from shortlisted candidates, in line with the effort to reduce the cost of applying. Read the advert; it is specific.
Can I apply for a post if I am not sure I qualify?Toggle answer
Apply if you meet the essential requirements. Adverts distinguish essential from desirable requirements, and a defence against a shortlisting decision rests on the essential criteria rather than the desirable ones. Where you plainly do not meet an essential requirement, the application is unlikely to succeed - but there is no penalty for applying, and a late or unsubmitted application definitely will not.
Do government jobs require a Z83?Toggle answer
Yes, for posts in the public service the Z83 is the prescribed application form. Some public entities and state-owned companies advertise posts outside the public service framework and may use their own application process, which the advert will state.
How do I know which province to apply in?Toggle answer
The advert states the province and the specific office where the post is based, and applications go to that province’s department. Some national posts are based at head office, and some have provincial posts under a national department, which is why reading the advert’s location rather than its department name matters.
Is it true that government posts are already taken before advertising?Toggle answer
No. Posts in the public service must be advertised, and selection is subject to the Public Service Act, the regulations and the requirement that the process be fair and defensible. Nepotistic appointments do occur and are investigated, but the assumption is not a reason to skip a post you qualify for - the majority of appointments are made from the applicant pool the advert produced.
