University application deadlines: how the South African cycle works

The short answer
Most South African public universities close applications for the following academic year on 30 September, and some close earlier for medicine, health sciences and other selection programmes. Applications are made directly to each university through its own online portal, and each application carries its own fee. Applying to several institutions is normal and expected. Financial aid through NSFAS is a separate application with its own dates, and many universities require a separate residence application.
University applications in South Africa share a rhythm, and the rhythm hides a trap: “most universities close on 30 September” is true and dangerous, because the programmes applicants care about most are usually the exceptions.
The calendar
| Stage | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Applications open | April to May for the following academic year |
| Selection programmes close | June to July - medicine, health sciences, some others |
| General deadline | 30 September |
| NSFAS applications | September to November/December, per the published dates |
| Late applications | After 30 September where a programme has capacity |
| Matric results | January |
| Registration | January to February |
The sequencing matters more than any single date. Applications close months before results are released, which means offers are often conditional on results that do not yet exist.
Applying to more than one institution
Each university runs its own portal, its own fee and its own document requirements. There is no central application system. That is more work than applicants expect, and the work is what stops people from applying widely.
Apply to several. A conditional offer from a second or third choice is what makes the negotiation in January possible when results land differently to the plan.
The documents
- Certified identity document.
- Grade 11 results and, when they arrive, Grade 12 results.
- Proof of the application fee payment.
- Programme-specific requirements: a portfolio, an audition, a written motivation, or a National Benchmark Test result where the programme asks for one.
Certified copies expire in practice. A copy certified more than a few months before the application will often be rejected, so gather documents close to the submission date rather than months in advance.
Funding runs on its own clock
Applying for a place and applying for money are two separate processes, and the second has an earlier deadline.
NSFAS 2027 applications opened on 18 September 2026, and officials published conflicting closing dates - a ministerial launch indicating 18 November 2026 and the application guide showing 31 October 2026. We record both and advise meeting the earlier date. The NSFAS status guide explains what each outcome means, and the bursary deadline tracker counts down to each published date.
Beyond NSFAS, apply through the institution’s own financial aid office and check employer and sector bursaries in the field you are entering. A household should not rely on a single source.
Residence and accommodation
Accommodation is almost always a separate application with its own deadline and its own fee. A student accepted into a programme without a residence place faces a private rental market in a city they may never have visited.
Apply for both in the same month, and if the residence application closes before the academic one - which happens - apply for accommodation first.
If results do not go to plan
Matric results arrive in January, and a result below the conditional offer changes things. The re-mark and re-check and re-write routes are the remedies, and each has a deadline that falls soon after results. Deciding in advance which subjects you would query is the only way to use the window effectively.

Frequently asked questions
When do university applications close in South Africa?Toggle answer
For most public universities, applications for the following academic year close on 30 September. Medicine, health sciences and some other selection programmes close much earlier - often in June or July, and sometimes sooner. Each university publishes its own dates, and the only reliable source is the institution itself.
Can I apply to more than one university?Toggle answer
Yes, and you should. Applications are made to each institution separately, each with its own fee. Applying to several institutions is normal and gives the applicant a place to negotiate with. Each application needs its own documents, so the work multiplies - start early.
What documents do I need for a university application?Toggle answer
Typically a certified identity document, your Grade 11 and, once available, Grade 12 results, and proof of any fee payment. Where a programme requires it, additional documents such as a portfolio or proof of subjects may be needed. Requirements differ by institution and by programme.
Do I apply for NSFAS at the same time?Toggle answer
NSFAS is a separate application with its own window, made on the NSFAS website. It opened on 18 September 2026 for 2027 and officials have published conflicting closing dates - the earlier of the two is the one to meet. Applying to a university does not apply for funding.
What happens if I miss the deadline?Toggle answer
Some institutions accept late applications for programmes that have not filled, and others do not. Where a late route exists, the application usually carries an additional fee and a second window with its own closing date. The risk is that the programme of choice has filled, which is why 30 September matters so much more than it appears to.
Do I need to apply for a residence separately?Toggle answer
Usually yes. Accommodation is generally a separate application to the university’s residence office, with its own deadline, and it can close before or after the academic application. A student admitted to a programme has not thereby secured a room, so apply for both.
