SASSA Status Check Appeal: How to Appeal a Declined SRD Grant

If your monthly SASSA R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) application was marked as Declined, you have a statutory right to appeal each rejected month to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) within 90 days.

Step-by-step instructions: How to lodge your appeal

1

Check the exact decline reason

Before appealing, check which month was declined and the reason given on your status check. Common reasons include "alternative_income_source_identified", "identity_verification_failed", "uif_registered", or "nsfas_registered". You will need to contest this specific finding.

2

Visit the official DSD Appeals Portal

Go directly to the official Independent Tribunal portal: srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. Do not use unofficial third-party link shorteners or search engine sponsored ads.

3

Enter your ID and registered phone number

Type in your 13-digit South African ID number and the exact cell phone number associated with your SASSA profile. Click "Send Pin" and enter the 4-digit OTP sent via SMS to verify your identity.

4

Select the declined month and state your reason

Select the specific month that was declined. Choose the reason why SASSA's assessment was incorrect. For instance, if SASSA flagged an "alternative income source" because of a once-off money transfer from a relative or child support that did not exceed the R624 threshold, select the corresponding explanation.

5

Submit and record your confirmation reference

Click submit. Take a screenshot or write down the confirmation message. The Independent Tribunal will adjudicate your claim within 60 to 90 days. If your appeal succeeds, SASSA will release backpay for that month during their next payment run.

Common SASSA decline reasons & how to solve them

Decline status code What it means Recommended appeal action
alternative_income_source_identified Bank checks detected deposits of R624 or more in your account during that month. Appeal if the funds were a loan, once-off family emergency support, or not personal income.
identity_verification_failed Your name, surname, or ID number does not match Home Affairs records. Check spelling of surname on ID; complete facial biometric verification if prompted.
uif_registered Department of Employment & Labour records show you as currently receiving UIF. If your UIF benefits ended or you never received payout, obtain a UI-19 letter and appeal.
nsfas_registered NSFAS database shows an active tertiary bursary funded by the state. Appeal if you graduated, dropped out, or your bursary was discontinued.

You have exactly 90 days from the date your application status showed "Declined" or "Alternative Income Source Identified" to lodge an appeal with the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

Where do I submit my SASSA status appeal online?Toggle answer

Appeals are submitted directly on the official Department of Social Development Independent Tribunal website at srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals. You will need your South African ID number and the mobile phone number you used during your original grant registration.

How long does a SASSA appeal decision take?Toggle answer

By regulation, the Independent Tribunal has between 60 and 90 days from receipt of your appeal to adjudicate and communicate a formal written decision. During this period, the Tribunal independently reviews bank records and income databases.
