The short answer

To get a SARS Tax Compliance Status (TCS) PIN, log in to your SARS eFiling profile, go to 'Tax Compliance Status' in the menu, select 'Activation' if not yet enabled, and click 'Tax Compliance Status Request'. Choose your purpose (Good Standing, Tender, or Foreign Investment), submit, and download or copy the generated PIN.

Government departments, prospective employers, and commercial clients frequently require proof of tax compliance before awarding contracts or appointing personnel. SARS provides this proof digitally through the Tax Compliance Status (TCS) PIN.

Requirements Before Requesting Your PIN

To qualify for a green (compliant) status indicator, you must have:

  • No outstanding tax returns across any tax types for which you are registered (Personal Income Tax, Corporate Income Tax, PAYE, VAT).
  • No outstanding tax debt with SARS, unless an official suspension of payment or approved instalment agreement is active.
  • Verified registered details (banking information, physical address, and contact numbers).

Step-by-Step Instructions on eFiling

Step 1: Log in to SARS eFiling

Navigate to sarsefiling.co.za and log in with your username and password.

Step 2: Access Tax Compliance Status

On the main menu, click on Tax Compliance Status in the left navigation sidebar. If you have not activated the service previously, click Activation and select your tax product to turn the feature on.

Step 3: Request a New PIN

Click on Tax Compliance Status Request. Select the category matching your need:

  • Good Standing: General verification for job applications, banking facilities, or corporate vetting.
  • Tender: Required for bidding on public sector tenders through National Treasury.
  • Foreign Investment Allowance: For transferring capital abroad.

Step 4: Submit and View Dashboard

Review the pre-populated details and click Submit. Your dashboard will immediately indicate your compliance standing:

  • Green (Compliant): Your compliance PIN is generated immediately.
  • Red (Non-compliant): SARS will list the exact outstanding return or debt preventing compliance.

Step 5: Distribute Your PIN

Click Print PIN or copy the alphanumeric code. Provide this PIN alongside your South African tax reference number to any verifying entity.

Checklist

  • Active SARS eFiling profile
  • All tax returns (ITR12, EMP201, VAT201) up to date
  • No outstanding tax debt (or approved deferral / payment plan in place)
