Independent decision guide
Public school calendar vs independent school calendar
The Department of Basic Education publishes the national public-school calendar. Independent schools may use a different calendar, subject to the rules and arrangements that apply to that school. A public-school term date should not automatically be treated as the date for every private school.
Which should you choose?
If a learner attends a public school, start with the national calendar and check provincial notices. If the learner attends an independent school, use the school’s own published calendar and confirm changes directly with the school.
| Aspect | Public schools | Independent / private schools |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar source | National DBE calendar, with official provincial notices where relevant. | The school’s own official calendar and notices. |
| Term dates | Use the published national dates for the relevant school year. | Dates may differ by school or network. |
| Unexpected closure | Check DBE and provincial education department updates. | Check the school’s direct communication channels. |
| Admissions | Provincial admissions systems and deadlines may apply. | School-specific admissions policies and windows may apply. |
