South African passport vs Smart ID card
A Smart ID card is a national identity document for eligible South African citizens. A passport is a travel document used for international travel, subject to the destination country’s entry rules. They are not interchangeable simply because both are issued by Home Affairs.
Which should you choose?
For domestic identity needs, check the current Smart ID services. For international travel, check passport validity and the destination’s visa and entry requirements before booking.
