How to use it

  1. Enter the loan amount - The capital you are borrowing, before interest and fees.
  2. Enter the annual interest rate - As a percentage, for example 11.75.
  3. Enter the term in months - A 60-month vehicle finance agreement is 60.
  4. Compare the totals - The total interest figure is usually the most revealing number on the page.

Estimate only, not a bank quote or financial advice. This estimates principal and interest only; it excludes transfer costs, bond registration, initiation and service fees, insurance, rate changes and any balloon payment. Compare the full cost in a lender's quotation.

Enter the home-loan amount, annual interest rate and term in months to estimate monthly principal-and-interest repayments. The estimate excludes bank fees, bond registration costs, insurance and future rate changes.

The monthly repayment is the least important number

A lender quoting a monthly instalment can make almost any loan look affordable by stretching the term. Extending a vehicle finance agreement from five years to six lowers the instalment and raises the total interest substantially. That is why the National Credit Act requires a pre-agreement quotation showing the total cost of credit, not just the instalment.

When you compare offers, compare the total amount repayable and the interest rate the lender is actually applying, then look at whether the rate is fixed or linked to the repo rate. A linked rate moves with every Monetary Policy Committee decision.

The costs that sit outside the interest rate

Initiation fees are capped by regulation but still add to the amount financed, which means you pay interest on them. Monthly service fees accumulate over the term. Credit life insurance is often included by default and can be declined in some cases. A balloon or residual payment lowers your monthly instalment and leaves a large lump sum owing at the end.

This estimator works on principal, rate and term only. Treat the answer as the floor of the cost, then add the fees from your quotation to see the real number.

Borrowing inside your means

A repayment that consumes more than roughly a third of your net income is difficult to sustain through a job change, an interest rate rise or a large unexpected expense. Affordability stress shows up in South Africa most often when a linked rate increases and the instalment grows with it.

Before signing, test the repayment at one or two percentage points above the quoted rate. If the higher figure does not fit your budget, the loan is too large for the moment, regardless of what the credit assessment says.

How this fits into the rest of the site

A calculator answers "what number", but the decision behind it is usually about a date and an official process. If you are checking whether a deadline has passed, the Important Dates Centre carries the published dates with their sources. If you are checking a government status, no calculator can help you and no website outside government can either - the relevant official link is listed at the bottom of this page.

We do not claim to be a government service and this tool has no official standing. It is an independent estimate published for planning, with its sources named so you can check every figure against the body that actually decides it.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include bond registration and transfer costs?Toggle answer

No. This calculator estimates principal and interest only. Bond registration, conveyancing, transfer duty where applicable, bank fees, insurance and other property costs are separate.

Can my repayment change?Toggle answer

Yes. A variable interest rate, changes to the loan balance, extra payments or a different lender agreement can change repayments. Use the bank's quotation for the contractual figure.

Is this a mortgage approval or affordability assessment?Toggle answer

No. It does not assess creditworthiness, household expenses, bank affordability rules or whether a lender will approve your application.
